Fear and Great Joy

Grace Church

“Father Jack”, as he is affectionately known, has served the parishioners of Grace Episcopal Church as their rector since 2004.

Fear and great joy.

Fear because a dead man is walking about.

Joy because he has been raised.

Fear because the earth quakes.

Joy because the stone is rolled back.

Fear because the angel descends like lightening.

Joy because of the message, “Do not be afraid.”

Fear because the soldiers of empire shook and became like dead men.

Joy because the women witnessed the all controlling empire of this world faint away.

Fear because Jesus was not there.

Joy because he is going ahead to Galilee.

Fear because they left the tomb.

Joy because they were running to tell.

Fear because suddenly Jesus met them.

Joy because they took hold of his feet and worshiped.

Fear and great joy.

That is Easter, that is this day, the confusion, the unexpected.

So we as well fear for letting go of the old world, the old ways.

So we as well have great joy for the new world, the new way that opens before us.

Joy because our chains are broken.

Fear because we have to give up being slaves.

Joy because it is Easter, the Lord is risen!

Fear because what do we do now?

Joy because death has lost its sting.

Fear because we have to give up the ways of death and live.

Joy because we share in his resurrection.

Fear because we share in his resurrection.

Keep the feast.

Keep the fear.

Keep the great Joy.

He is risen. He is Lord.

Oh sweet Jesus alleluia amen. What do we do now?

What we do now is celebrate the sacrament of new birth.
