BEAUTIFUL FEET

Grace Church

“Father Jack”, as he is affectionately known, has served the parishioners of Grace Episcopal Church as their rector since 2004.

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”

The prophet Isaiah said that. The apostle Paul liked it so much that he said it again in his letter to the Romans.

A vision of feet made beautiful by bringing good news.

Tell me something good. I need some good news. Just tell me something good.

A vision of God. That’s what I need. A vision of God that will help me keep it together and get me through.

The vision we are given is God washing feet, bidding us to join in, to give it a try.

I recently read a report on the explosion of the Space shuttle Challenger, and how they carefully reconstructed the cataclysmic failure piece by piece and how they discovered that the astronauts survived the explosion only to die upon impact with the ocean.

Holy week is like that.

We carefully reconstruct the accident, the scene of the crime, the train wreck, the cataclysmic failure that killed Jesus.

Where did things begin to go wrong? What was the beginning of the chain of events that led to the cross?

The vision of being at table together, of bread and wine, of washing of feet then… betrayal, arrest, trial, torture and death.

The vision of God, something good, something beautiful that sustains, that challenges, sharing a meal, washing feet, give it a try… then things fall apart so quickly.

Tell me something good. Something that will help me hold it together, that will get me through.
