A little pile of dust and dirt.
That’s all we are.
Add a few gallons of water, add the breath of God, and we live.
The grace of God holds us together and animates us into life, holding us in life, keeping us alive for only a short time.
And then something happens or we just wear out, and we go back down to the dust, dust to dust, earth to earth, ashes to ashes.
We are all dying.
We all have a fatal case of mortality.
I am going to die.
You are going to die.
Perhaps very soon, perhaps not.
All that holds us in this thin envelope of vitality, all that keeps this pile of dust from falling apart is the grace of God.
We have our mortality literally rubbed in our face today.
We us pretty words, “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.” All that means is that you are going to die, you are running out of time.
The bottom line is that life is too short and too precious to waste.
Cherish life, relish life, be thankful for the days that we do have.
We don’t have time to waste on sin.
That’s the worst thing about sin, it wastes what little time we have.
You are going to die.
Today we strive for the perspective that comes with that knowledge.
Today we strive to give up the stuff of sin that wastes what little breath we have left.
And today we strive to turn toward the grace that holds us in life, and that frees us from all that destroys the gift of life, the redemption that our Lord Jesus Christ lavishes upon us.
My advice about how to live?
Die with a thankful heart.
