Grace
Episcopal Church is and has been very active with outreach
projects. Over the past twenty years, we have been instrumental
in starting several ministries that have gone on to
become freestanding charities. Notable among these are
Meals on Wheels; a shelter for homeless families called
the Anderson Sunshine house, Anderson Interfaith Ministries,
and the Emergency Soup Kitchen. We have provided dictionaries
and Christmas presents for an inner-city low income
school and once a year we hold a blood drive to aid
the local hospital Our two major fundraisers, a soup
luncheon and a barbecue, have been very successful functions
and contribute significantly to these and to other ministries.
A
major world outreach program is our mission to assist
a parish in Bas Cange, Haiti. It began over twenty years
ago when Bishop William Beckham formed an alliance with
Rev. Fritz Lafontant, an Episcopal priest in Cange,
Haiti. His cachement area has been designated as the
poorest in Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western
Hemisphere. What started out as a small clinic under
a tree has grown into a mission that is now a model
for other Third World countries. Dr. Paul Farmer, an
anthropologist and tropical disease specialist from
Harvard University, became involved early on and is
responsible for organizing the treatment of tuberculosis
and AIDS in the area.
Over
the years, Grace Church has sent members who are lay
persons, priests, and medical professionals to assist
in this worthwhile project. We recently committed with
four other area churches to build and operate a school
there in the Bois Joli area that was identified as the
greatest need by Father Lafontant. The school is now
under construction.
We
at Grace are proud of this work and hope to continue
these outreach efforts for years to come.
